I produce bold, bright landscapes and seascapes, with a graphic, poster-like influence. Rivers and shorelines are very appealing, but I live a stone's throw from the New Forest as well as the Hampshire coast, so I am increasingly drawn to forest and woodland sites. I always try to find colour combinations that 'zing' when placed together! Strong, simple, silhouette shapes fascinate me. No doubt this has its roots in my background as a graphic designer and illustrator.
This method of painting comes very naturally to me; I relish the challenge in finding simple, graphic ways of conveying a landscape or seascape. Having said that, it still takes a lot of self-discipline to resist adding too much detail! It’s also a style which produces the bold colours I always strive for.
I occasionally have fun with watercolour, ink and pastel to shake up the brain cells - and to unashamedly check that I can still handle other mediums! But the gouache style is ‘me’.
Devon was my home for years before moving to Hampshire. I used to produce illustrations for books, brochures and adverts, but I love now painting the scenes that make me catch my breath. My portfolio is a mix of scenes from both these counties, as well as Dorset and Wiltshire. However, I have plans to tackle other subjects, such as nightscapes and portraits in this graphic style. It is important to vary what I do and stay challenged.
Nowadays, I am experimenting with larger paintings on canvas - so watch this space!
Originals, limited-edition prints, open-edition prints and greeting cards are available. I also work on commission; talking to people and discussing what they are seeking is an enjoyable part of my work. My website will keep you up-to-date with my exhibitions.
