Phil Hargreaves

Artist Bio

I have been painting for many years and have exhibited in France and the U.K., winning awards at the Derby Arts Festival Exhibition and the Ferens Winter Exhibition in Hull. I paint in oils and acrylics. My oil paintings are mainly landscapes, in a loose impressionistic style, enhanced by the texture and freedom of painting with a palette knife. My work is inspired by my native Yorkshire or by my travels in Europe, Japan and the U.S.A. I am also a keen birdwatcher and wildlife photographer and shots taken in the field often provide a stimulus for a painting in the same impressionistic style.
I have recently started using acrylics, inspired by the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in Yorkshire. I have produced several pictures capturing the colour and excitement of cycling and am now turning my attention to other sports such as horse racing. Many of my paintings are also available as limited edition giclee prints or as greetings cards.
My paintings always tend towards the semi-abstract as I seek to capture the fundamental beauty or drama of a scene through juxtaposition of shape and colour
