Theatre arts and the Slade were a strong background to my feeling for human expression and life. Much of my painting is portraiture, with over 150 works in public and private collections: family homes, schools and universities from Devon to Dundee, including Salford, Stirling, Edinburgh, Oxford, The British Cardiac Society, The Royal Society of Edinburgh and Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
I paint people from all walks of life; from academics and scientists to farmers and industrialists; mothers, family groups and children, ambassadors and peers. I try to get to the heart of every sitter.
Besides commissioned portraits, I paint independent figure compositions both large and small, in lively colour. These are developed from directly observed drawings of common human interaction and experience: the poetry of the everyday. In this gallery, together with examples of commissioned portraits, I am currently exhibiting a few oil paintings and oil pastels from my series, Alone and Together, Brunel's People.
