Fay Wood

Artist Bio

Sculpture using unique found objects has attracted me since 1965, when I was living in the San Francisco Bay area.  There I saw the colorful mixed media sculpture made by artists from objects lying on the shores of the Bay. They were fantastic, noisy, beautiful figurative works with great sense of humor and form; I have never forgotten them.  On meeting a sculptor who encouraged me to carve wood, I began what has become a love of sculpture and found object assemblage. In 1992, I  began combining found objects and mixed media with the cherry wood carvings I had been doing - and have never stopped.

Wood objects, metal, layered found rag paper over metal and wire, and texture became the materials  of choice, and  I use paint and beeswax for a finish.  The works I make have permanence and are unique -  a quote by Virginia Woolf....."Arrange whatever pieces come your way"  is my philosophy.   A recently created  series of collages have a narrative content, using found materials, most of them vintage, which lends a new feel to the work.

My Exhibition History is extensive, including the Biennale Dell Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy,( I have been invited to return in 2019); Cologne, Germany: Albany Institute of History & Art, Museum of Art & Design, NYC; the National Sculpture Society & Brookgreen Gardens, where I won the Proskauer Prize for sculpture, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Salmagundi Club,NYC. My work is found in private  & corporate collections in the USA and Europe.  In April, 2019, PBS aired a program worldwide, featuring some of my work and commentary. It is hosted by the website Artrepreneur, and Burt Wolf Productions; look at your local PBS listing.

I am a Member of the International Sculpture Society, National Sculpture Society, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Orangenius, Circle Foundation, and show my work regularly in the Hudson Valley of New York, and online. You can see more of my  work at   https://www.faywoodstudio.com
